Tips for Eating Healthy For Picky Eaters

As a self-proclaimed picky eater, I know that eating healthy can be difficult when there is not many things I find enjoyable. I have been a picky eater for as long as I can remember and I find that I usually enjoy foods the most that aren't always the best for me. I have found ways to work around this issue, however.

One tip I have is to experiment with textures of the same food. I can't eat raw broccoli, but when it is cooked or steamed so it is softer, I find myself really enjoying it. This is the same for cauliflower, carrots, eggplant, and tomatoes. Cooked vegetables can even make the nutrients found in the vegetable even more attainable as well. I recommend trying to eat as many different vegetables as you can, that way you know for sure what you like and what you don't like. Being open-minded is essential for trying to eat healthier.

A second tip I have is to find healthy recipes that don't contain too many different ingredients. It is especially great to find recipes that contain ingredients that you know you like. For me, the easier a recipe is to make, the more likely that I will make it and enjoy it. If it is simple then there is also more control over what is going into the dish and small modifications can be made to make it both more enjoyable and healthy. I would recommend looking at my previous post about MyPlate for information on how to find healthy, well-balanced meals that are easy to make. I will also include some recipes at the end of this post.

Lastly, I also recommend using a food journal or app so that you can see what nutrients you are truly eating. For me, using a food diary app on my phone helped me realize what nutrients I was missing out on and how many bad things like sugar and sodium that I was consuming too much of. I would recommend this for people who have a healthy relationship with food and their bodies as this tracking could be triggering for some. By using this food tracking app, I was able to make changes in my diet so that I could replace unhealthy foods with healthier options. The app I used is called MyFitnessPal, but MyPlate is another resource that can be used for this. Cronometer is another resource that I would recommend. It can be difficult getting used to tracking food since you have to know measurements such as serving sizes, but I think it is a great learning experience since this is something I feel like many people are not aware of when it comes to consuming the right proportions.
